Jakarta (ANTARA) - Students from the University of Indonesia (UI) and Paramadina University staged a protest in front of the Greater Jakarta Police Headquarters on Friday, in response to the death of an online motor taxi (ojol) driver during a rally the previous day (29/8).

On Thursday, Affan Kurniawan, an ojol driver, died after being run over by a tactical vehicle during a protest against the House of Representatives.

A widely circulated video shows a Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) vehicle speeding toward the crowd in an attempt to disperse the mass.

According to ANTARA’s observation on site, by 3:00 p.m. (GMT+7), Paramadina University students had already gathered in front of the headquarters, wearing their signature blue jackets.

About 25 minutes later, students from the University of Indonesia arrived at Semanggi’s TransJakarta bus stop in yellow jackets.

After waving to their peers, the two groups joined together to protest, voicing their demands as Indonesian citizens.

Student groups, including the National Student Executive Board (BEM SI) and the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Board (BEM UI), had earlier announced their plan to rally in front of the police headquarters.

According to BEM UI’s media team member, Daffa Izzulhaq, around one thousand UI students departed from their Depok campus in West Java at 2:00 p.m. (GMT+7) to join the protest.

The students put forward several demands, including holding authorities accountable for apprehending and assaulting protesters, releasing all detainees, and pursuing structural, cultural, and instrumental reforms within the police force.

Separately, the Head of the National Police Professionalism and Security Division, Abdul Karim, confirmed that seven officers are under investigation in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan pledged that the government will conduct a transparent investigation into the death of Affan Kurniawan.
