We are all Indonesian citizens, and we must work together for our nation.Jakarta (ANTARA) - House Speaker Puan Maharani urged all parties to uphold unity amid recent tensions in Jakarta and other regions.
In a written statement, Puan stressed that Indonesia must not be divided.
She delivered the remarks while offering condolences at the home of Affan Kurniawan in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday. Affan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, died after being run over by a police tactical vehicle during a protest that turned violent on Thursday night.
Puan called on the National Police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
“We will closely monitor this case until it is resolved and ensure that incidents like this do not happen again,” she said.
She also urged the public and law enforcement officers to exercise restraint and maintain order during ongoing demonstrations.
“Let us safeguard the unity of the nation together. Do not let our country be divided or sacrificed. We are all Indonesian citizens, and we must work together for our nation. Let us act with self-restraint and protect Indonesia,” Puan stated.
Puan was accompanied by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) House faction member Said Abdullah and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.
Upon arriving at Affan’s home, Puan embraced the grieving mother and personally conveyed her condolences.
“Assalamualaikum,” Puan said softly while holding Affan’s mother.
“Stay strong and patient,” she added, embracing and holding her hand again, before greeting Affan’s younger sibling.
Puan also promised to provide educational assistance for Affan’s sibling and a motorcycle for Affan’s father, who also works as an online motorcycle taxi driver.
