“Recent demonstrations over the past week stem mainly from a sense of solidarity against perceived injustice,” he said in Ambon on Sunday.
He noted that social and political movements will continue to emerge when people feel they are treated unfairly. Therefore, public aspirations should be addressed wisely to prevent the situation from escalating into harmful actions.
Dominggus also urged Ambon residents to respond calmly to national social and political dynamics and avoid being provoked into anarchic demonstrations.
“There is no need to take to the streets. It would be better if all parties sat down together to find solutions, as there may be groups seeking to exploit the situation for their own interests,” he said.
He warned that the wave of solidarity could spread to other regions, including Ambon, but emphasized that such risks can be mitigated through healthy dialogue.
“If the government responds to people’s aspirations, the potential for protests can be neutralized,” he added.
Dominggus stressed that the current tensions are purely social and political, not cultural. Local traditions such as pela gandong, he said, do not automatically prevent people from staging protests.
Even so, he expressed gratitude that Ambon residents so far have remained prudent in addressing emerging issues.
To maintain stability, he called on all elements of society not to be swayed by divisive narratives.
“To preserve peace and stability, it is best for all parties to sit together and find the right solutions so that Maluku can serve as an example for other regions,” he said.
