Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government aims to restore several Transjakarta bus shelters that were burned during recent riots in Jakarta, with operations expected to resume in less than a week.

"My target is for them to be functional in under seven days," Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He emphasized the importance of quick repairs, noting that the shelters are heavily used, particularly by commuters in the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) area.

"Given the severity of the damage, we will at least make them operational as soon as possible," Hanggodo said.

He added that full restoration will depend on structural assessments. If the shelters are deemed unsafe and require rebuilding, the process will take longer.

Last week's violent protests, sparked by the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver struck by a police vehicle near the Parliament Complex on August 28, caused widespread damage in several regions. In Jakarta, seven Transjakarta bus shelters were destroyed by fire.

Hanggodo earlier estimated total losses from the unrest at around Rp900 billion (US$55 million), with the largest damage recorded in East Java.
