Jakarta (ANTARA) - Several vendors at Pasar Senen Jaya shopping center resumed operations on Wednesday, following recent demonstrations filled with unrest in the surrounding areas of Senen and Kwitang, Central Jakarta.

As early as 8:49 a.m. local time, several traders were seen preparing to open their shops, although the market officially begins operation at 10 a.m.

Eyewear shops, clothing and accessories stores, as well as several food and beverage outlets have reopened and are serving customers, while some shops remain closed.

Pasar Senen Jaya resumed operations on Tuesday (September 2), after being temporarily closed by the management due to unrest that led to the burning of a nearby TransJakarta bus stop.

Nia (29), a clothing vendor, expressed relief at being able to reopen her stall. “Alhamdulillah (Thank God), we are open again, but some shops are still closed because of fear,” she commented.

She recalled that on Saturday (August 30) she and other vendors took their valuable goods home as a precaution against possible looting during the height of the unrest.

Meanwhile, Agus (43), a vendor of eyeglasses and accessories, noted that over 60 percent of the shops have reopened since Tuesday, although customer traffic was still below normal levels.

The vendors are now hoping that conditions around Senen Jaya will return to normal, encouraging more customers to return.

“We just hope things stay safe moving forward. People are free to protest, but please don’t let it turn violent or lead to looting, because it affects everyone,” Agus said.

A security officer, who declined to be named, said that since the market reopened on Tuesday, no disturbances have occurred inside or in the surrounding area.

“The situation is safe and under control. Although the protest got heated, the crowd did not enter the building,” the officer stated.
