Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Ministry has repatriated 18 Indonesian nationals from Nepal following widespread upheaval and riots that engulfed the mountainous country.

According to the ministry's written statement, the Indonesians departed from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday, accompanied by a protection team stationed in Nepal.

They are expected to arrive in Jakarta via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten on Friday, the ministry added.

The ministry noted that the 18 nationals came from several institutions, including the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, the Health Ministry, the University of Indonesia, as well as GIZ Indonesia and a hydro association.

Most of them were in Kathmandu to attend the Indonesia-Nepal-Germany trilateral “3rd Exchange of Renewable Energy Mini-grids in South-South and Triangular Cooperation” (ENTRI) event from September 8 to 12, 2025.

Some other Indonesians in the evacuation group visited Nepal as tourists when the upheaval erupted.

According to the team's monitoring, most Indonesians in Nepal were located in Kathmandu, while some others were in Pokhara and Lumbini regions.

The Foreign Ministry stated that its protection team and the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, accredited to Nepal, will remain in the country to monitor developments and ensure the safety of repatriated nationals.

Meanwhile, the ministry's director for information and media, Hartyo Harkomoyo, said his office continues to communicate with hundreds of Indonesians in Nepal to monitor their condition and safety.

"The Indonesian embassy in Dhaka is intensively communicating with some 134 Indonesians there, including those residing or visiting for particular purposes, including those attending international events in Kathmandu," Harkomoyo said on Thursday.

Youth protests against corruption and social media ban in Nepal turned chaotic as riots and looting spread in the capital and other regions, resulting in the death of 31 people and injuries to hundreds of others.

The widespread protest also led to the collapse of the Nepali government after the resignation of Prime Minister Sharma Oli. President Ram Chandra Paudel promptly initiated talks to form a new government.
