Thousand Islands District Head Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan emphasized that the project is listed as a National Strategic Project (PSN), designated by the central government through Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Regulation Number 8 of 2023.
He noted that the initiative is not only about building a world-class tourism destination but also about creating major employment opportunities for local residents.
He acknowledged that development projects inevitably draw both support and opposition.
However, he stressed that success should not be measured solely by tourist numbers, but also by how far the people of Thousand Islands can prosper as hosts while preserving their environment.
“We must work together to ensure this project delivers the greatest possible benefits for the community,” Fadjar said.
Meanwhile, PT SPI representative Andry Khrisnawan explained that the public consultation is a key step in preparing the amdal document, which will later be reviewed by the Environmental Impact Assessment Commission of the Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency.
He called on residents to provide input on potential economic and ecological impacts and encouraged them to appoint four to five community and youth leaders as representatives in the provincial-level assessment process.
The initial phase of the project will include land reclamation on sandbanks or temporary landforms that naturally emerge in shallow waters around Pulau Air.
The total project area will cover 112.4 hectares, consisting of about 80 hectares of reclaimed land and the remainder for supporting facilities.
