Head of BNPB’s Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in a statement here on Thursday, said the risk of disasters could increase in regions entering the second decade of September.
The period marks the transition from the dry season to the rainy season that is expected to peak from November 2025 to April 2026.
BNPB specifically warned of moderate to very heavy rainfall potential from September 19-22 in several areas, a condition that could trigger disasters that must be anticipated early.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Bengkulu, East Java, Central Papua, Highland Papua, and South Papua, the agency reported.
“BNPB urges local governments to enhance preparedness and alertness against wet hydrometeorological disasters that can happen at any time,” he said.
He added that besides deploying personnel to vulnerable regions, local governments can also declare emergency disaster alert status, which eases dispatch of personnel so that evacuation needs can be fulfilled optimally.
For instance, the East Kalimantan Provincial Government has declared wet and dry hydrometeorological emergency alert status through December 31, 2025.
Thus, he said, the government can immediately respond to urgent needs of impacted residents including food logistics and evacuation as well as equipment like rubber boats and water pumps.
BNPB also reminded the public not to shelter under trees during heavy rain with strong winds, to keep water channels clear of trash in densely populated settlements, and to monitor river water levels regularly.
“Residents living in hills, cliff slopes, and the foot of mountains need to watch out for heavy rain lasting more than one hour, monitor weather developments, and follow directions from local governments and other related agencies,” Muhari said.
