BNPB representatives joined officials from other G20 members in virtual talks held on September 16–17, which will continue on September 25–26 as part of preparations for the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13.
The Indonesian delegation, led by BNPB Deputy for Systems and Strategies Raditya Jati, received support from India, the United Kingdom, Norway, and China for contributing to the drafting of the upcoming resolution, according to a statement cited in Jakarta on Thursday.
"We reiterated that building lasting resilience is key to advancing development efforts, protecting people, and ensuring that our collective disaster risk reduction measures remain adaptive, inclusive, and future-oriented," Jati said.
He highlighted that the draft resolution incorporates 12 primary points proposed by G20 countries and international organizations, stressing that the working group emphasizes that disaster risk reduction should become a global priority.
The negotiating parties, he added, share a consensus that reducing disaster risk is crucial for driving sustainable development, promoting economic stability, and strengthening protection for people, especially those living in disaster-prone regions.
Participants in the talks include Australia, Brazil, India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, Singapore, the European Union, and the African Union.
On October 8 and 10, the working group will convene a technical meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, to finalize the draft, which is set to be adopted at a ministerial meeting on October 12–13.
The points agreed upon in the declaration are also expected to be reflected in a document to be issued during the G20 Summit, scheduled for November 22-23 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
