New York (ANTARA) - At the invitation of United States President Donald Trump, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the Multilateral Meeting on the Middle East, held in the Consultation Room of the United Nations Security Council in New York.

According to a statement from Prabowo's secretariat cited in Jakarta on Wednesday, only leaders of countries considered influential in peacebuilding in the Middle East were invited to the high-level meeting, which took place on Tuesday (September 23).

Alongside Prabowo and Trump, the forum was joined by Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

Also present were the United Arab Emirates’ Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s readiness to support all efforts toward peace, including by deploying peacekeeping forces to help stabilize and rebuild Gaza.

In his opening remarks, President Trump underscored the significance of the forum, noting its potential to pave the way for peace in the Middle East. He affirmed his commitment to ending ongoing conflicts, including the war in Gaza.

“This is going to be a very important meeting. It’s going to be a meeting with great leaders from a very important part of our planet: the Middle East. We want to end the war in Gaza, and we are going to end it,” he stressed.

Trump expressed confidence that the attending leaders could help advance the peace process.

Qatari Emir Al Thani, for his part, praised the US president for initiating the crucial high-level discussion.

“The only reason we are here is to stop the war and bring the hostages back. And we count on you and your leadership to end this war and help the people of Gaza. The situation is very, very bad there,” he told Trump.

Before continuing his remarks, Trump also extended praise to Al Thani and to President Prabowo for his 20-minute speech earlier at the General Debate of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.

He then described the Middle East discussion as the most important meeting on his UN agenda.

“Because we are going to end something that should have probably never started,” he said.
