Indonesian parliament deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad voiced support on Wednesday for former top minister Mahfud MD’s role in the government’s upcoming Police Reform Commission, citing his experience and credibility.
“Mr. Mahfud is a credible figure. Given his previous post overseeing political, legal, and security affairs, he understands what needs to be done,” Dasco told reporters at the Parliamentary Complex.
The House of Representatives' (DPR's) deputy speaker said he had no objection to the appointment and deferred questions on other potential members to the government.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi confirmed on Tuesday that Mahfud had agreed to join the commission, which is being formed under President Prabowo Subianto’s directive.
“Mr. Mahfud has expressed his willingness to assist the government in police reform,” Hadi said.
The commission is expected to include around nine members, including former police chiefs. Hadi noted that further details would be shared after President Prabowo returns from an overseas visit.

Mahfud, a former coordinating minister, chief justice, and lawmaker, has held senior positions across all branches of government.
Most recently, he ran as a vice presidential candidate alongside Ganjar Pranowo in the 2024 election.
Known for his legal reform advocacy, Mahfud has repeatedly stressed the need for the National Police (Polri) to rebuild public trust, particularly following public criticism over recent handling of protests and civil unrest.
“Public trust is essential for effective law enforcement,” Mahfud said previously, warning that credibility gaps could erode the rule of law.
The formation of the Police Reform Commission follows mounting calls for greater accountability, transparency, and professionalism within the Polri ranks.
President Prabowo is expected to make a formal announcement on the commission’s composition and mandate in the coming weeks.
