According to FGI’s official statement, the 19-year-old athlete died on Thursday (September 25), Jakarta time, after spending 12 days in intensive care at GA Zakharyin Hospital in Penza City.
“Our national athlete, Naufal, has passed away. He was a talented young gymnast and a kind-hearted individual. Indonesian gymnastics has lost one of its brightest stars,” said FGI Chairperson Ita Yuliati on Friday.
Naufal was described as a promising athlete who had been training for the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta next October and the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand next December.
He was also expected to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, according to FGI.
The Federation noted that since September 1, Naufal and four other male gymnasts had been undergoing intensive training at the Burtasy Palace of Sports in Penza City, supported financially by the Youth and Sports Ministry.
However, Naufal was involved in a training accident that required hospitalization in the intensive care unit. FGI did not disclose further details about the incident.
Throughout Naufal’s treatment, FGI coordinated closely with the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow, the Russian Gymnastics Federation, and the hospital to ensure proper care.
Following his passing, FGI has been in active communication with Naufal’s family to arrange their travel to Russia and handle the administrative process for repatriating his body to Indonesia.
“We are coordinating with Naufal’s family, the Federation’s East Java branch, the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow, and the Russian Embassy in Jakarta to ensure the prompt repatriation of his body,” Yuliati stated.
