Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s sovereign wealth manager Danantara is preparing Rp2 trillion to Rp3 trillion ($123 million to $185 million) for each waste-to-energy (WTE) project site, with 33 facilities planned across the country, an executive said on Tuesday.

Each site will be designed to process 1,000 tons of waste per day, Managing Director for Investment Stefanus Ade Hadiwidjaja told reporters at Danantara’s Jakarta headquarters.

“In many countries, waste problems have been addressed using WTE technology, particularly incinerators. For a capacity of around 1,000 tons, the total investment, including supporting infrastructure, will be about Rp2 trillion to Rp3 trillion,” he said.

Danantara is working with the Environment Ministry, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, and local governments to implement the projects.

The company will also invite partners from the private sector, regional enterprises and foreign investors to participate.

“We will select the most appropriate technology and partners to ensure optimal results. The goal is not just profit but also environmental inspection and reducing the waste crisis,” Hadiwidjaja said.

He added that the projects could create jobs and trigger a multiplier effect for local economies.

Construction of each facility is expected to take 18 to 24 months.

“We will hire people to operate and manage the plants, creating multiplier effects several times over,” he said.

Electricity generated from the waste processing plants will be purchased by state utility PLN, he added.

“The energy will be bought directly by PLN. That’s roughly the scheme,” Hadiwidjaja said.
