Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali on Wednesday inaugurated the KRI Belati-622, a 60-meter missile fast attack craft (KCR), at Pluit Naval Base in Jakarta.

Built by local shipbuilder Tesco Indomaritim, the vessel is the country's first warship to feature a hybrid propulsion system powered by biofuel.

"This ship is highly fuel-efficient, can operate longer, and is environmentally friendly thanks to its biodiesel capability," Ali said at the naming ceremony.

The KRI Belati-622 is equipped with advance weapons and SEWACO (Sensor and Weapon Command and Control system) — a combat management system developed through partnerships between Indonesian defense firms and Turkish companies Havelsan, Roketsan, and Aselsan.

Ali noted such collaborations open opportunities for more domestic shipbuilders to work with global defense contractors.

The ship will be deployed to the Navy’s Eastern Fleet Command (Koarmada III), which has fewer vessels than the western and central fleets.

"This ship will strengthen our Eastern Fleet, which is still lacking in numbers compared to Koarmada I and II," he said.

Tesco Indomaritim CEO Jamin Basuki described the launch as a breakthrough for Indonesia’s naval development.

“This hybrid concept is the first of its kind in the country. We’ve been researching this for nearly 10 years, and now we have a system with one propeller and two waterjets,” he said.

The ship also carries a heavy-duty engine capable of 30,000 operational hours before a general overhaul, compared to 9,000 hours in light-duty ships.

Jamin expressed hope the innovation would boost confidence in Indonesia’s shipbuilding industry and strengthen national maritime security.
