Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso has encouraged the use of Village and Urban Co-operatives Merah Putih (Kopdes) as a key distribution channel for staple goods.

He said the presence of Kopdes can help secure supplies while maintaining stable prices at the local level.

During his visit to Kopdes Sukomoro in Nganjuk District, East Java, on Friday, Santoso noted that the cooperative has been providing rice, cooking oil, sugar, eggs, and other essential goods. Prices remain relatively stable with sufficient availability.

Kopdes Sukomoro also offers LPG and fertilizer, while working with Bulog and ID Food to distribute products, including the government-subsidized cooking oil brand Minyakita.

“By channeling supplies through village and urban co-operatives, availability will be more secure and prices more affordable for the public,” Santoso said in a written statement from Jakarta.

Beyond basic supplies, Kopdes Sukomoro seeks to expand its role as a marketing hub for local products.

Fresh shallots, processed fried shallots, and shuttlecock products are being promoted through partnerships with major export-oriented businesses.

The cooperative operates with a vision of delivering maximum benefits to its members while strengthening the role of village-based co-operatives in supporting national food security.

The Kopdes Program is a government initiative to establish 80,000 cooperatives across villages and urban wards in Indonesia.

The program aims to reduce poverty, improve community welfare, strengthen the people’s economy, and promote economic self-reliance through the principles of mutual cooperation and participation.

The initiative focuses on empowering micro-economies by providing fair access to capital, enhancing food security, and creating employment opportunities at the village level.

By fostering inclusive economic participation, the program is expected to build a stronger foundation for local development while supporting national economic growth.
