Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has allocated Rp25 billion (around US$1.5 million) to audit 80 Islamic boarding school (pesantren) buildings identified as old and potentially unsafe.

After chairing a ministerial meeting on Friday, Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar said the audit is being conducted by the Task Force for the Structural Infrastructure of Pesantren Buildings.

Public Works Minister Doddy Hanggodo said the audit will be carried out in several phases due to the large number of pesantren nationwide.

He explained that the budget for reviewing the first batch of 80 pesantren stands at Rp25 billion.

The task force will prioritize pesantren buildings that meet certain criteria, including structures over 10 years old, buildings with more than two floors, and pesantren housing more than 1,000 students.

It will follow up on reports and conduct on-site inspections of pesantren infrastructure. The task force includes representatives from the Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment, the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and local governments.

Friday’s meeting was attended by Finance Ministry Budget Director General Luky Alfirman, Public Works Minister Doddy Hanggodo, Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, and Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno has urged relevant ministries and agencies to conduct comprehensive evaluations of structural safety standards at educational institutions nationwide, particularly Islamic boarding schools.

The call follows the fatal collapse of a building at Al Khoziny Pesantren in Sidoarjo, East Java, on September 29, which claimed dozens of lives.
