Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Tourism Ministry and Indonesian consulates in Australia have strengthened the development of educational tourism by promoting Indonesia as a leading edutourism destination to Australian travelers.

This initiative was carried out through a familiarization trip (famtrip) themed “Archipelago Gems: Islands of Ancient Souls,” held from October 15–20, involving participants from educational institutions, travel agents, and education associations in Australia.

“This activity can strengthen Indonesia’s position in the Australian market, not only as a holiday destination but also as a safe, comfortable, and relevant educational tourism destination for young Australian travelers,” said Ni Made Ayu Marthini, an official at the ministry, in a statement here on Saturday.

The famtrip is a follow-up to the Educational Business Matching event and part of the government’s 2025 edutourism promotion program.

As a strategic move to boost Australian tourist arrivals while promoting education-based travel experiences, the program attracted around 15 participants who were divided into two travel groups based on destination preferences.

The first group, consisting of nine participants, explored Yogyakarta and Jakarta, while the second group of six participants continued their journey from Yogyakarta to Bali.

The activities included visits to Borobudur Temple, storytelling sessions, batik-making, cultural immersion, a traditional herbal jamu workshop, and others.

The famtrip is expected to serve as a concrete step in expanding access and exposure to Indonesia as a high-quality educational tourism destination, while also deepening bilateral cooperation in education and tourism between Indonesia and Australia.

“The Tourism Ministry will continue to promote similar programs in the future through integrated marketing strategies, stakeholder partnerships, and the full utilization of Indonesia’s potential in education-based tourism,” Marthini stated.
