Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transmigration Minister Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara has called for the revision of Law Number 29 of 2009 on Transmigration to make it more relevant to inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered economic development.

Suryanagara said he had discussed the plan with Law and Human Rights Minister Supratman Andi Agtas and received full support to include the revision in the national legislation program by the end of this year.

Speaking at the Transmigration Ministry headquarters here on Saturday, he stated that the revision is needed to clarify the direction and implementation of economic development in transmigration areas.

He noted that the most significant change would be in Article 32 paragraph (4) letter (a), which will not only emphasize self-sufficiency but also add an economic growth dimension that must be translated into concrete and practical measures on the ground.

He added that the revision is a key opportunity to position transmigration as an instrument for achieving economic equity involving both transmigrants and local communities in development.

"We must focus more on realizing inclusive and sustainable economic growth by involving transmigrants and local communities," he said.

The minister assessed that the transmigration program holds great potential in designing an inclusive economic growth model by creating jobs, strengthening regional industries, and sustainably improving people’s purchasing power.

He cited that Central Sulawesi and North Maluku are provinces whose economic growth has been above eight percent, but is still deemed less inclusive because the contribution from household consumption and the community's purchasing power is still low.

Suryanagara noted that improving the capacity of local communities to help them work in industries is key to realizing equitable and sustainable economic growth, because with improved income, purchasing power and state revenue are expected to increase.

He underlined that the transmigration sector will be directed to focus on community empowerment, encouraging people to become the main players of regional economic development, and to make transmigration an instrument to reduce regional disparity in Indonesia.
