Speaking in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Clinical psychologist Andhita Dyorita, from University of Aisyiyah Yogyakarta warned that drug abuse is becoming increasingly alarming, with substances now disguised as candies to target even elementary school children.
“Drug forms have become more ‘innovative’ and ‘creative’—but in a harmful way,” she said.
She stressed that two traits must be developed early: self-control, which helps regulate behavior, and resilience, which enables individuals to face challenges without resorting to drugs.
“Children must learn not to turn to drugs when facing problems,” she explained.
Character education, she added, is a shared responsibility—not only of parents and schools but also the broader community.
Strengthening emotional intelligence is essential, including self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.
“Children need to understand their emotions, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to respond appropriately,” Andhita said.
She also highlighted the importance of fostering self-efficacy, starting with simple decisions like choosing their clothes, to prepare them for more complex choices later in life.
Instilling empathy, morality, religious values, and a sense of responsibility is also crucial to help children distinguish right from wrong and resist negative influences.
On rehabilitation, Andhita advocated for a holistic approach that addresses not only addiction but also its root causes, such as family issues, heartbreak, or depression.
“There’s no point in treating addiction without understanding the underlying stressors,” she said.
Effective rehabilitation, she noted, involves collaboration with psychiatrists and combines psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, including CBT, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, family therapy, and social reintegration. Family support and education are vital to recovery.
To combat stigma, Andhita called for ongoing community education in schools, campuses, and neighborhoods to foster understanding and strengthen prevention efforts.
