Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto stated that Indonesia has not yet decided to purchase any BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India.

He acknowledged that discussions regarding the BrahMos missile system were brought up when Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin hosted the Chief of Defense Staff of the Indian Armed Forces in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"Oh, not yet," Taufanto said during a press conference following the meeting.

During the high-level meeting, India's CDS General Anil Chauhan explained that the BrahMos missile is currently utilized for various operations, including ground-to-ground, ground-to-sea, and air-to-ground capabilities.

Taufanto confirmed that India had also modified its own Sukhoi aircraft to carry the BrahMos, but stressed, "There was an offer to modify our Sukhoi to carry the BrahMos, but we have not done that ourselves, nor have we purchased the BrahMos."

He concluded by reiterating that Indonesia does not have a contract with India for the BrahMos at this time.

The potential for collaboration on BrahMos missile technology had been explored earlier when the Indian Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, visited Jakarta in December 2024.

During that visit, Admiral Tripathi met with the Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali.

Admiral Ali later confirmed that the possibility of defense technology collaboration, including the BrahMos missile, was among the topics discussed.

However, Admiral Ali maintained that defense equipment procurement ultimately falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense.

"Regarding the BrahMos missile, we are still reviewing it, since it will be the Ministry of Defense's choice, but ultimately, the Ministry of Defense will decide," he noted. Admiral Ali himself visited the BrahMos missile factory in India in January 2025.
