He said the SNDC aims to reduce total emissions by strengthening carbon absorption in the FOLU sector.
"The FOLU is projected to absorb minus 206 million tons of CO₂ equivalent by 2035. This means reforestation activities must exceed deforestation," Nurofiq stated.
"Reforestation must cover more than 12 million hectares. This is a very ambitious target that must be achieved," he added.
The government is targeting the forestry sector to achieve a net sink capacity equal to or greater than its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, or FOLU Net Sink 2030.
Nurofiq said strengthening the FOLU sector is crucial, as peak emissions from the energy sector — one of the largest contributors — are projected to occur only in 2038.
However, he acknowledged that reforestation efforts and the preservation of vulnerable ecosystems such as peatlands require significant funding.
To support financing, Indonesia is developing a carbon economic value ecosystem by participating in the voluntary carbon market already operating internationally.
He added that the government has issued a presidential regulation on implementing carbon economic value instruments and national greenhouse gas emission control to advance Indonesia's carbon market transformation.
