Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Government is planning a massive reforestation program in various regions of Indonesia, mainly targeting 6.5 million hectares of land within forest areas, according to Presidential Special Envoy for Energy and Environment Hashim Djojohadikusumo.

Speaking during the dissemination of information on COP29 results here on Tuesday, he said that to balance the food estate program, reforestation will be carried out in critical areas.

"Thus, the food estate program continues while we mitigate the possible negative impacts with new programs, one of which is reforestation," he remarked.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni will lead reforestation in degraded forest areas.

On the same occasion, Antoni confirmed that reforestation will be conducted on the targeted 6.5 million hectares of critical land located in forest areas.

The reforestation process will be conducted through an intercropping system, including planting several plants that can benefit the surrounding community.

It is also carried out by ensuring that the reforestation process will support the welfare of residents around the forest area without having to cut down trees.

The minister indicated that the Ministry of Forestry will commence reforestation efforts on 500 thousand hectares initially, with the potential for expanding the area, pending support from additional stakeholders.

He affirmed that based on President Prabowo Subianto's directive, his ministry already has a road map for the massive reforestation program, which continues to be enhanced.

"For the next year, with the initial initiative, we can carry out reforestation in 500 thousand hectares of land. I think, by involving private parties, we can carry out this program faster," he remarked.
