Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment Ministry has deepened cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to strengthen the role of universities in regional environmental management and protection efforts across Indonesia.

Through this collaboration, the two ministries aim to assist 48 higher education institutions in developing or upgrading their centers for environmental studies as part of efforts to formulate more effective regulations and policies supporting environmental sustainability.

Addressing the media in Jakarta on Thursday, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq underlined that since being pioneered by Indonesia’s first environment minister, Emil Salim, such study centers have made significant contributions to the country’s green policymaking processes.

Nurofiq admitted that in determining environmental management measures, the Environment Ministry heavily relies on recommendations provided by experts or academics and the Higher Education, Science, and Technology Ministry.

“We hope to revitalize the environmental study centers so they can provide the support required by district and municipal governments,” he added.

Beyond policymaking, the minister stressed that universities and academics can also play crucial roles in planning, evaluating, and enforcing legal instruments related to environmental sustainability.

On the same occasion, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto expressed appreciation to the Environment Ministry for its keenness to involve and empower campuses in environmental policy formulation.

He noted that this initiative aligns with his ministry’s commitment to guiding higher education institutions in making tangible contributions to addressing various issues, including those concerning the environment.

On that note, Yuliarto expressed hope that the collaboration would empower campuses, laboratories, and researchers while also providing the Environment Ministry with credible academic studies relevant to its duties.

The two ministries have also reached an agreement with 48 higher education institutions to rehabilitate mangrove ecosystems in 123 locations across the country.
