In a statement received on Saturday, Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) member Yuke Yurike said that in addition to drainage problems that often cause flooding, landslide-prone areas also need serious attention.
"The condition of large trees in Jakarta must be monitored by the Parks Office. Pruning should be carried out if necessary to prevent trees from falling, especially as strong winds often accompany the rainy season," she said.
Yurike underlined the importance of flood mitigation to minimize the number of affected residents.
"Evacuation takes time because flooding often occurs suddenly and simultaneously, although inter-agency coordination has so far been good and professional," she remarked.
She also warned of potential water level increases from upstream rivers, stressing the need for dredging and inspections of waterways, embankments, and bridges.
"Anticipations must be made early so that the provincial government is ready for the impact of the rainy season at the end of 2025," she said.
Yurike called on the Jakarta Water Resources Office to inspect inundation points and raise public awareness to stop dumping household waste into rivers and drains.
Flood control efforts, she added, must be carried out comprehensively.
"For example, the Ciliwung River and the other 12 river flows must be handled thoroughly. Only then can Jakarta reduce or even eliminate flooding," she said.
Earlier, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said flood handling in the capital had been faster than in surrounding areas, supported by 600 standby water pumps.
He acknowledged that inundation continues to occur in Jakarta, especially in recent days as the city has frequently been hit by rain.
