Head of the ministry's Agency for Quality Control and Supervision of Marine and Fishery Products, Ishartini, in a press conference here on Thursday, noted that the step is part of the strategy to strengthen the quality control system for fishery products.
In addition, it is also aimed at maintaining export market trust in Indonesian fishery products amid rising global demand.
She noted that the first laboratory equipped with radioactive testing equipment is set to be operational in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, by the end of 2025.
The laboratory building is already available, but it is currently awaiting the arrival of the radioactive testing equipment, which has been ordered and is scheduled to arrive in the near future.
"The building is already there; it belongs to the ministry, but it does not yet have the radioactive testing equipment. We have already ordered the equipment, and hopefully, it can be operational by the end of this year," she remarked.
In addition to Jakarta, the ministry will also develop similar laboratories in Surabaya, East Java, and Makassar, South Sulawesi, as part of efforts to evenly distribute testing facilities across the country's western and central regions.
In the next phase, the laboratory will also be built in Medan, North Sumatra, to enhance the quality supervision of fishery products, given the region's position as a major national export hub.
The ministry ensured that all technical experts assigned to the laboratories have been trained to operate the equipment in accordance with international standards and to conduct testing in line with food safety procedures.
The government is optimistic that the presence of laboratories in various regions will bolster Indonesia's position as a major supplier of safe and high-quality fishery products for the global market.
