We must preserve digital inclusion so that AI does not become a privilege reserved for only a few countries or social classes..
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has called for international cooperation to ensure inclusive, human-centered, and equitable governance of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly for developing countries.

Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani delivered the statement at the 11th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation Forum in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.

She noted that Indonesia recognizes AI as a strategic technology capable of driving future economic growth despite its high energy demand.

Puan also emphasized that AI can directly contribute to achieving sustainable development goals.

“We recognize the opportunities AI offers to accelerate development, as well as the risks it poses — particularly the widening technological gap between rich and poor countries,” Puan said.

She urged MIKTA parliaments to promote accountability in technological governance, highlighting that AI is increasingly influencing parliamentary functions.

According to her, parliaments must set clear limits on data collection, usage, and management, while ensuring that accountability remains in the hands of elected human representatives.

“We must preserve digital inclusion so that AI does not become a privilege reserved for only a few countries or social classes,” she said.

Puan stressed that climate disruptions are already occurring, energy systems are under strain, and AI is actively reshaping the global economy. If parliaments fail to act now, she warned, the transition will continue — but not in an equitable way.

“The transition to cleaner energy must uphold justice, resilience, and dignity. AI must be managed in a way that empowers society, with its benefits shared rather than concentrated,” she concluded.
