Jakarta (ANTARA) - Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the production of Indonesia's national car will start in 2027, with the national defense equipment manufacturer, Pindad, appointed as the project's developer.

"We are projecting national car production to start in 2027," he confirmed here on Thursday.

Kartasasmita affirmed that he had held detailed discussions with Pindad, covering the type of vehicle to be produced, the technology to be used in the manufacturing process, the pricing strategy, marketing strategy, and after-sales service.

"These strategic discussions are aimed at preparing for and realizing the President's directive for Indonesia to have its own national car as soon as possible," he remarked.

According to him, the Ministry of Industry and Pindad have also discussed the possibility of inviting other partners to jointly develop the national car.

"Based on our assessment from the Ministry of Industry’s meeting with Pindad, we can conclude that Pindad is ready and its concept is quite complete," he explained.

Furthermore, he added that his ministry is currently formulating stimulus or incentive policies for the automotive sector.

This step, he said, is taken because the automotive industry has significant and sustainable backward and forward linkages, which include job creation and protection benefit.

"The Ministry of Industry is paying special attention to the automotive sector because it is too important to be ignored. There will be at least a fiscal policy in 2026 to accelerate the growth of the automotive sector," he remarked.

President Prabowo Subianto earlier stated that the government has begun the initial steps to realize Indonesian-made cars, targeted to be achieved in three years.

"We have started the initiative. We will have Indonesian-made cars in the next three years," he said in his speech in a plenary cabinet meeting at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (October 20).

According to him, the government had allotted funds and land for the construction of the factory that will produce domestic vehicles, which is currently being prepared by the development team.
