Senior Commissioner Turmudi, traffic unit chief at the Bali Police, said that the Buleleng District Police has engaged with the Chinese consulate in Denpasar for the investigation and repatriation of the victims.
"The case has been handled by Buleleng District Police, and we are coordinating with the Chinese consulate, as well as Interpol, to seek assistance in probing traffic accidents involving foreign national victims," Turmudi stated here on Monday.
He added that other injured victims, also Chinese nationals, have received treatment at medical facilities in the region.
The police official did not provide further details about factors that may have contributed to the accident, including possible driver negligence or road conditions.
“We are investigating the case, and we have yet to determine the causes scientifically. We will release the results later,” he said.
The accident occurred at the Singaraja-Denpasar Road in Buleleng District on Friday at 4:30 a.m. local time. The Toyota HiAce minivan, with plate number N 7605 TA, carried 13 Chinese tourists along with an Indonesian driver, identified as Arif Al Akbar.
According to Buleleng Police’s traffic unit chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Bachtiar Arifin, the bus lost control on a winding, downhill section of the road, veered off into a farm field, collided with a tree, and overturned.
"The driver could not control his vehicle, causing it to lose control and veer into a resident field," he said.
The accident caused the death of 5 Chinese tourists, identified as Zhong Yuemei, Xu Mingbiao, Xu Huijuan, Xu Huangyuan, and Xu Yuexiang.
Meanwhile, 8 other Chinese tourists survived the accident and received medical treatment at a local hospital in Buleleng. The driver also survived and suffered only minor injuries.
