Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Immigration and Corrections Ministry has arrested a fugitive from China, a 58-year-old former CEO of a real estate company, suspected of involvement in a corporate loan case worth 980 million yuan (US$137.8 million).

Director of Immigration Intelligence, Police Commissioner Agus Waluyo, explained at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday that the suspect failed to repay his corporate loan, fled the country, and was later arrested following a request from the Chinese government.

"The arrest was conducted based on a diplomatic note from the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta. The suspect was arrested in the Nagoya area in Batam on Thursday, November 13, 2025," Waluyo said.

The suspect had been designated by the Chinese police as a financial crime suspect and placed on a wanted list. However, instead of facing legal proceedings, the suspect fled the country.

According to Waluyo, before entering Indonesia, the suspect had moved among several countries in Asia since August 2025 and arrived in Indonesia on October 7 using a visa on arrival (VOA), then settled in Batam, Riau Islands.

Based on a diplomatic note from the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta, the immigration enforcement team from the Batam Immigration Office conducted intensive monitoring. Waluyo said the suspect was apprehended by the immigration team without resistance.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Batam Immigration Office, Hajar Aswad, stated that there was no detailed information from the Chinese government regarding the suspect's modus operandi.

Aswad explained that his office received a diplomatic note identifying the suspect as a financial fugitive, someone who has fled legal jurisdiction to avoid justice for financial crimes.

"The diplomatic note was submitted to the Directorate General (of Immigration) on November 11," he said.

The suspect remains in detention awaiting further investigation. At the same time, the Directorate General of Immigration coordinates with Chinese authorities to process the case in line with relevant legal rules and diplomatic procedures.
