Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has asked the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to provide support for domestic industrial technology innovation.

The directive was conveyed by BRIN Head Arif Satria after a meeting with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday.

"The President instructed that BRIN should provide its support to several strategic industries," he said.

According to him, there are several strategic industries that require research and development support to maintain productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability, so they can continue to absorb labor.

He further outlined that the sectors of focus include the food industry, agro-industry, energy industry, and several types of manufacturing industry, such as garments, textiles, footwear, and electronics.

These industries are considered to be highly labor-intensive, thereby requiring stronger research to maintain their contribution to the economy.

Satria noted that Indonesia has a competitive advantage in the footwear and garment sectors, while the electronics industry's self-reliance still needs to be strengthened.

He added that the discussion with President Prabowo also covered research support for the defense equipment industry.

He affirmed that his agency has created several innovations with the state-owned aerospace company Dirgantara Indonesia, including the N219 aircraft, which is ready for increased production based on government orders.

In addition, he continued, BRIN is currently preparing to enhance the production of seaplanes in collaboration with Dirgantara Indonesia, as well as working with state-owned defense company Pindad to support the development of defense equipment and the automotive sector.

As for the food sector, BRIN will enhance strategic partnerships with state-owned palm oil company Agrinas Palma Nusantara, state-owned food company Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, and state-owned fishery company Agrinas Jaladri Nusantara to accelerate innovation downstreaming.

The BRIN head added that his agency will also synergize with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology for the consolidation of national research and innovation.
