Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of National Development Planning Rachmat Pambudy emphasized that Indonesia’s food and health development, particularly nutrition, must adopt a more comprehensive approach.

“Several challenges indicate the need for sustainable interventions and governance to transform Indonesia’s food and nutrition system. Development in this sector must be more holistic,” Pambudy said in a statement here on Friday.

He made this statement during the Kick-Off of the 12th Pre-National Food and Nutrition Workshop themed Transforming Food and Nutrition Systems in Strengthening Free Nutritious Meals (MBG).

He noted that food and health development must respond to upcoming health burdens, including climate change, demographic transitions, conflicts, and advances in health technology.

He added that food and nutrition are key to achieving the Golden Indonesia 2045, or Indonesia becoming an advanced nation by that year. According to him, the vision aligns with Law No. 59 of 2024 on the National Long-Term Development Plan (2025-2045).

Currently, 81 districts and cities face food insecurity amid the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental degradation.

Indonesia also confronts a Triple Burden of Malnutrition: stunting affects 19.8 percent of children, underweight 16.8 percent, wasting 7.4 percent, and overweight 3.4 percent, alongside widespread micronutrient deficiencies.

Therefore, the workshop, organized with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), involves universities, professional organizations, local governments, businesses, and development partners to formulate inclusive, sustainable food and nutrition policies.

“We have about five years until 2030 to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By 2041, we hope to emerge from the middle-income trap,” Pambudy said.

Therefore, BGN Head Dadan Hindayana welcomed experts' discussions focused on transforming food and nutrition systems, including affordability, consumption, and governance.
