Sorong, Southwest Papua (ANTARA) - Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is evaluating transmigration area development in Sorong, Southwest Papua, with a focus on strengthening the agricultural and livestock sectors to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on food imports.

ITB lecturer and Head of the Tourism Development and Planning Program, Alhilal Furqan, said here on Friday that the evaluation process, part of a program initiated by the Ministry of Transmigration, aligns with President Prabowo’s AstaCita missions, which places food security as a priority agenda.

“This step is also a strategic step to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on food imports by strengthening agriculture and livestock sectors in the regions,” he said.

Furqan noted that ITB is one of seven universities assigned to evaluate the transmigration areas, focusing on Klamono and Saigun areas. Five ITB teams have been reviewing several strategic aspects as the basis for the transmigration region's development.

The evaluation covered physical, social, and environmental conditions of the transmigration areas.

In addition, the teams also identified leading and potential commodities to boost local economic growth. The aspect of social harmony was also assessed to prevent conflict between transmigrants and indigenous communities, ensuring sustainable development.

Infrastructure availability was also thoroughly reviewed, including roads, education, health facilities, and electricity supply.

According to Furqan, adequate infrastructure is the foundation for long-term economic growth.

The evaluation also examined the local economic structure, opportunities to strengthen community economic institutions, and the development of small businesses.

“All initial findings will serve as a basis for future local economic progress,” he added.

The three-month evaluation, conducted from late August to December 2025, is the first stage in a series of ongoing studies that will continue into 2026.
