The two leaders met at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 3. Puan highlighted the strong presence of Indonesia and China in multilateral forums, reflecting their shared commitment to revitalizing multilateralism amid climate crises and global economic inequality.
“We would like to specifically appreciate China for its active role as an observer at the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly through its National People’s Congress,” she said.
Puan also noted that both parliaments have been active in agendas led by the global economic bloc BRICS, including the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum held in Brasilia, Brazil, in June this year.
“In an increasingly polarized world, international forums initiated by ASEAN and BRICS have taken on a greater role in strengthening an international system grounded in fairness and equality,” she stated.
Regarding bilateral cooperation, she emphasized the rapid growth of economic relations between Indonesia and China, noting that China remains one of Indonesia’s most important partners in trade and investment.
She said the two countries recorded US$147.8 billion in trade in 2024, a significant increase from previous years. Chinese investment also reached US$8.2 billion last year, making China Indonesia’s third-largest foreign investor.
Puan added that Indonesia and China have signed several cooperation agreements, including those promoting the use of local currencies in trade and supporting economic and industrial development to advance mutually beneficial collaboration.
“I hope Indonesia and China will continue expanding their constructive cooperation to improve mutual economic and social welfare outcomes and contribute to broader economic progress for the developing world,” she concluded.
