“The law does not forbid it as long as it is conducted democratically,” he told reporters at the ministry's office here on Thursday.
He added that whether regional heads are elected directly by voters or by DPRD representatives, both methods meet the democratic definition.
“Democracy can take two forms: directly elected by the people or through DPRD. The 1945 Constitution does not prohibit either,” he said.
Previously, Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia proposed that regional heads return to being elected through DPRD.
“Specifically regarding local elections, a year ago we suggested that elections be held via DPRD only. There was much debate, but after careful review, it seems better to follow the DPRD election system for districts/cities to simplify the process,” Lahadalia said.
The proposal was made during a joint prayer event celebrating Golkar’s 61st anniversary titled Merajut Kebersamaan Membangun Indonesia Maju or "Building Togetherness for Advanced Indonesia".
The event was attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Chair of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani, Chair of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, as well as state officials and political party leaders.
Lahadalia said discussions on the draft law (RUU) on political law will begin next year, involving all stakeholders to accommodate aspirations from all people.
“This is to ensure discussions are comprehensive, careful, and precise, incorporating wide-ranging input. The RUU must undergo thorough study,” he said.
He emphasized that deliberations on the Political Law must include all stakeholders’ aspirations so no one feels ignored, preventing potential challenges to the Constitutional Court.
