Several bridges linking regions in Sumatra were severed by flash floods, including the Meureudu Bridge in Pidie Jaya District, Aceh. He personally inspected the bridge repair work.
“This is not only about infrastructure but also the livelihoods of many people, the movement of aid logistics, and the swift recovery of the regional economy,” he said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
He explained that the bridge is a crucial access point on the inter-provincial road connecting Aceh and Medan. He said the collapse has completely halted the main land route and significantly affected public mobility and aid distribution.
He emphasized that rebuilding the bridge is essential to ensure optimal access and a rapid return to normal conditions.
He expressed hope that coordination between the central and regional governments will continue to strengthen, enabling the Aceh-Medan inter-provincial route to be restored quickly and safely.
He also listened to concerns raised by local governments and residents, who called for the normalization of rivers blocked by logs and mud after the flash floods, fearing additional flooding if heavy rain occurs again.
He added that he would coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to allocate available funds to accelerate the rehabilitation of essential infrastructure and the construction of temporary housing.
“Public facilities such as roads, schools, and places of worship must be restored as soon as possible so that social, economic, and educational activities can resume,” he said.
