The collaboration was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between KPU Chair Mochammad Afifuddin and Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Arifah Fauzi in Jakarta on Monday.
"The KPU wants to synergize with many parties, including the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, to encourage, firstly, an increase in women's participation in politics," Afifuddin remarked.
According to him, the MoU is also intended to anticipate issues that women face in the workplace, including gender-based violence, during the upcoming 2029 general elections.
He affirmed that the signing of the MoU aligns with the KPU Decree on the Prevention of Sexual Violence issued in September 2024.
"In September 2024, we issued a KPU Decree on the prevention of sexual violence and other matters. That decree represents our administrative commitment," he asserted.
He further said that the KPU's commitment will be properly implemented through joint guidance and education planning, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection.
On the same occasion, Minister Fauzi noted that through the MoU, her ministry and the KPU agreed to exchange data and ensure the safety of women and children during the upcoming general elections period.
According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), in 2024, the percentage of women's participation in parliaments in Indonesia stood at 22.46 percent, slightly higher than in 2023, which stood at 22.14 percent.
