Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has acquired a hotel in the Tahrir area with a total of 1,461 rooms spread across three towers for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as part of the Indonesian Hajj Village project.

Minister of Investment and Downstream, Rosan Roeslani, announced this news at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, after delivering a progress report on the Hajj Village development in Saudi Arabia to President Prabowo Subianto.

"We have purchased a hotel in the Tahrir area with a capacity of 1,461 rooms across three towers," he stated.

According to him, the project is targeted to begin in January 2026 and is expected to improve the comfort and efficiency of accommodation for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Roeslani said the hotel can accommodate approximately 4,383 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims.

In addition, the government has also purchased approximately 5 hectares of land in front of the hotel for further development.

He noted that approximately 13 additional towers and a shopping center will be built on the land for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Once all towers are completed, the total room capacity is estimated to reach 6,025 rooms, accommodating more than 23,000 pilgrims, he continued.

"It is only about 2.5 kilometers from the Grand Mosque," he added.

Roeslani mentioned that access to the Grand Mosque will also be easier with the construction of the Al-Hujun tunnel, which is targeted for completion next year.

This infrastructure will directly connect the pilgrims' residential area to the Grand Mosque, reducing the travel distance from the current 4.5-6 kilometers to just 2.5 kilometers.

The presence of these Hajj towers is expected to partially address the accommodation needs of approximately 200,000 Indonesian pilgrims each year, the minister remarked.

He also explained that Indonesia followed a rigorous bidding mechanism with eight plots of land offered, and the Indonesian government selected plot number six due to its relatively flat and strategic location.

However, around 90 bidders were also vying for the same plot.

Nevertheless, he stated that Indonesia had passed the crucial initial stage with the signing of a conditional sales and purchase agreement.
