Indonesia’s Tourism and Environment ministries signed a cooperation agreement on Monday in Jakarta to strengthen environmental management in tourism, tapping the sector’s economic potential as travelers increasingly pay more for eco-friendly options.
The agreement, signed by Tourism Deputy for Industry and Investment Rizki Handayani Mustafa and Environment Deputy for Pollution Control Rasio Ridho Sani, aims to enhance inter-ministerial coordination and boost national tourism competitiveness.
The collaboration includes programs to help tourism businesses improve environmental performance, with a joint task force drafting guidelines, adjusting assessment criteria, and providing technical guidance on sustainable practices.
Both ministries will also run outreach, training, public education, and monitoring programs to ensure consistent environmental management among operators.
"Sharing data and information is crucial, including active involvement from businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to make Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem stronger, more inclusive, and competitive," Rizki said in a statement on Tuesday.
Based on previous reporting citing the SiteMinder Changing Traveller Report 2025, 95 percent of Indonesian tourists are willing to pay more for environmentally friendly accommodations, with 36 percent willing to pay up to 10 percent more and 35 percent willing to pay up to 25 percent more.
This trend highlights the sector’s economic potential for sustainable practices.
Rasio said the Environment Ministry is committed to eco-conscious tourism development and continuous guidance to improve corporate environmental performance.
The cooperation follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the ministers on May 13, 2025, providing concrete follow-up actions to accelerate sustainable tourism development in Indonesia.
