Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has urged regional governments to ensure disaster mitigation preparedness, including equipment, personnel, and budget readiness, ahead of the 2026 New Year celebrations.

“If there are needs for central government intervention to immediately declare an emergency alert status, please report them promptly so the central government can provide full support,” Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that as an upstream preventive measure, the BNPB is collaborating with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to conduct weather modification in several areas where intervention is needed to prevent hydrometeorological disasters.

Muhari also warned that weather patterns in Indonesia remain highly dynamic as year-end travel increases, particularly to disaster-prone destinations. Therefore, all regional governments are urged to closely monitor the latest weather updates issued by the BMKG.

“We continue to coordinate with the control and operational centers of regional disaster mitigation agencies (BPBDs) given the highly dynamic weather conditions,” he said.

Meanwhile, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi affirmed that the Indonesian government has prepared anticipatory measures to mitigate disasters following extreme weather-triggered floods and landslides that struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in November.

He noted that he has coordinated with the Ministry of Forestry to accelerate the removal of timber from rivers to prevent blockages.

The minister added that the government has ordered the immediate mapping of areas with extreme slopes, particularly those with muddy or soft soil types.

He explained that such mapping is crucial, as soil characteristics vary significantly from one region to another.
