Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has emphasized that accelerating the rehabilitation of agricultural irrigation systems is key to increasing rice production, ensuring water availability, and achieving sustainable national rice self-sufficiency.

"The determining factors for success lie in improving seeds and fertilizers, as well as water availability," Sulaiman said in a statement on Saturday.

He said efforts to speed up the rehabilitation of irrigation networks continue to be strengthened, as they form a crucial foundation for achieving food self-sufficiency, particularly in rice production.

Supported by improved water infrastructure, national food performance has shown a positive trend, with rice production in 2025 projected to reach 34.79 million tons, Sulaiman said.

He added that government rice reserves are expected to reach 3.3 million tons in early 2026.

"One of the main focuses is strengthening agricultural infrastructure, especially irrigation networks, as a pillar of production sustainability and farmers’ welfare," he said.

Sulaiman noted that proper water management plays a key role in supporting the success of the agricultural sector.

Meanwhile, Director General of Agricultural Land and Irrigation Hermanto said the government has carried out large-scale and integrated development and rehabilitation of agricultural irrigation networks throughout 2025.

He said the government realized 99.93 percent of the first phase of irrigation network development, covering 280,880 hectares.

In the second phase, targeting 225,775 hectares, realization reached 83.46 percent for primary irrigation networks, 98.66 percent for tertiary networks, and 92.25 percent for groundwater irrigation construction and rehabilitation.

For the third phase, targeting 146,503 hectares, realization reached 67.67 percent for primary networks, 87.57 percent for tertiary networks, and 93.91 percent for groundwater irrigation systems.
