Jakarta (ANTARA) - Hundreds of rectors and leaders from Indonesian public and private universities signed a joint “performance contract,” committing to the realization of “impactful universities” in support of the 2045 Golden Indonesia vision.

Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto stated that university rectors are encouraged to optimize their role in creating breakthroughs, helping industrial development, and ensuring "downstreaming" of research outcomes.

"With this togetherness, we can create a national orchestration to support each other in our efforts to create positive impacts for the people," Yuliarto, who witnessed the joint commitment signing on Monday (January 5), stated in his written remarks on Tuesday.

The minister explained that Indonesia has much potential from human resources in universities, who must work to nurture advanced human resources, a strong research culture, and innovation for the national economy.

Yuliarto also called on higher education institutions to maintain education quality and strengthen the roles of lecturers as the forefront of the creation of future talents.

He assured the academia that the government will continue enhancing lecturers' working environment, including by providing research incentives and improving the research ecosystem.

"Indonesia has more than 4,400 higher education institutions, over 300,000 lecturers, and more than 10 million university students .. We hope these numbers will continue to grow and generate a multiplier effect for the nation," Yuliarto stated, highlighting their enormous potential for economic, social, and environmental development.

To strengthen the research environment, the ministry is committed to providing a more equitable research funding scheme, including by setting researchers' honorariums at 25 percent of state budget-funded research grants.

Yuliarto expressed hope that research conducted by universities can provide answers to real-life issues and contribute to science and technology-based industry development in Indonesia.
