Ankara (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's support for Türkiye’s bid to become an ASEAN dialogue partner, aiming to enhance its involvement in Southeast Asia.

In a joint press statement following the 2+2 Dialogue between the Indonesian and Turkish Foreign and Defense Ministers in Ankara on Friday, Sugiono welcomed Türkiye’s aspiration to become a full dialogue partner and expressed Indonesia's readiness to provide full support.

He explained that during the dialogue, delegations exchanged views on regional updates and their respective diplomatic positions in international forums, including the United Nations (UN), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and ASEAN.

As fellow Global South nations, Indonesia and Türkiye share a priority of realizing a just global economic system, with a specific focus on strengthening cooperation among Islamic countries.

Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to developing economic cooperation between ASEAN and Türkiye.

On the same occasion, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Türkiye maintains a holistic vision to strengthen ties with the Asia-Pacific region, including ASEAN countries.

He identified Indonesia as a key partner in helping Türkiye increase its regional engagement to achieve shared national goals.

Fidan also highlighted a recent visit by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as further evidence of Türkiye’s commitment to the region.

He noted that Türkiye officially expressed its desire to upgrade its status to a full dialogue partner during the 2+2 meeting and appreciated Indonesia's positive response.

Türkiye has been a sectoral dialogue partner for ASEAN since the status was officially recognized at the 50th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila in August 2017.
