The assurance was given in response to public concern that law revision would return the authority to elect the president from the people to the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), a system that was in place before 2004.
"We agreed that (deliberations on) the Election Law will not touch upon the presidential election by the MPR," Ahmad stated in a joint press statement with the State Secretary Minister at the Parliament Complex here on Monday.
The deputy speaker stated the Election Law revision, included in the 2026 National Legislation Program, is aimed at addressing Constitutional Court rulings on the election system.
He added, however, that legislators will still need to revise the election system further to ensure full compliance with the Constitutional Court’s verdicts.
Meanwhile, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, chair of Commission II of the DPR, which is responsible for election affairs, explained that the Election Law regulates only presidential, vice presidential, and legislative elections.
DPR's Commission II, he said, agreed that the presidential election will remain direct as the norm is consistent with the constitution.
"The DPR and the government are committed to the prevailing constitutional democracy norms," Karsayuda emphasized.
The commission chair also promised that the Election Law revision will involve public participation and input from election stakeholders, including determining what issues must be addressed in the revised law.
"But before that, political parties will first draft and deliberate their own problem list regarding our election system," he added.
