Padang (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has allocated Rp18.3 trillion (around US$1 billion) for rehabilitation and reconstruction in West Sumatra following floods and landslides that struck in late November 2025, according to a lawmaker.

House of Representatives (DPR) member Andre Rosiade said in Padang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday that the Ministry of Public Works will contribute Rp13.5 trillion (nearly US$800 million) to the budget.

He added that the remainder will be provided by the Agriculture Ministry, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and the Ministry of Housing and Settlement.

Of the funds, he continued, the Ministry of Public Works has earmarked Rp667 billion (US$39.3 million) to repair and reopen the vital Malalak Road in Agam District, which connects several districts and cities in West Sumatra.

"A total of Rp667 billion has been allocated for work on the Malalak Road in the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years," Rosiade said.

The legislator noted that the ministry will initially disburse Rp370 billion this year, with the remainder to follow in 2027, to restore the road, which has become a new main route for Eid al-Fitr homecoming travel alongside the Padang–Bukittinggi line.

"President Prabowo Subianto, through the Ministry of Public Works, has decided to take over the repair work so the road can reopen soon for residents," he emphasized.

He added that the ministry has begun repairing the land infrastructure, with a functional reopening targeted for December 2026.

"As for the stretch from kilometer 78 to 83, the government aims to complete repairs by 2027," he noted.

Separately, West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi said his administration requires Rp21.44 trillion (about US$1.2 billion) to support post-disaster measures across 16 districts and cities.

Meanwhile, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo earlier stated that it may take up to three years for the government to fully restore Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra after the major disasters.
