The support was formalized through a letter of intent signed by Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and WEF managing directors Sebastian Buckup and Maroun Kairouz on Thursday, January 22.
The signing took place at the WEF Congress Center on the sidelines of the 2026 Davos meeting in Switzerland and was witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Indonesia’s marine affairs ministry, which will co-host the summit, said the agreement aims to strengthen concrete action, partnerships, and sustainable investment.
The pact is also intended to align stakeholders in supporting the blue economy agenda and reinforce Indonesia’s leadership role at the global level, Trenggono said.
Under the letter of intent, cooperation between the ministry and the WEF focuses on four core areas to be advanced through the Ocean Impact Summit.
First, the agreement positions the ocean as a strategic economic, environmental, and geopolitical priority, highlighting its role as critical infrastructure for growth, climate stability, food security, and social welfare.
Second, it supports system-level dialogue and collaboration through the Ocean Impact Summit 2026 framework.
Third, it seeks to catalyze action, partnerships, and investment by supporting the identification, discussion, and launch of collaborative initiatives, platforms, and scalable investment pathways.
These initiatives are intended to extend beyond the Bali summit and deliver longer-term global and regional impact.
Fourth, the pact aims to strengthen alignment and coherence among stakeholders, including governments, financial institutions, industry, international organizations, innovators, philanthropies, and civil society groups.
The cooperation is designed to ensure these actors jointly support Indonesia’s blue economy priorities and sustainable ocean governance goals.
Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto promoted the Ocean Impact Summit to WEF participants in Davos as a platform for advancing ocean-based solutions.
He invited global economic figures and world leaders to attend the meeting in Bali, positioning it as a key forum for international cooperation on ocean sustainability.
