Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has reminded households of their role in addressing the national waste emergency to support the implementation of the circular economy at the grassroots level.

"The role of households is the main key to resolving the national waste emergency through circular economy implementation," Nurofiq said in a statement on Tuesday.

He made the remarks after inspecting Ciamis District, West Java, on February 1 to review the consistency of community-based waste management, which placed the district at the top of the 2026 Adipura Award assessment.

Nurofiq said technical data showed that waste in the district was dominated by food waste at 38 percent, while households contributed the largest share at 49 percent.

He said the figures showed that household-level intervention was no longer optional but essential to reduce pressure on final waste disposal sites.

Reducing organic waste at the source can significantly improve the efficiency of national waste management, he added.

The ministry also monitored daily waste management at Ciamis Market, including waste segregation and organic processing using maggot-based methods and composting.

He said synergy between local governments and traders in reducing daily waste has become a key national performance indicator.

According to the ministry, Ciamis has excelled in policy, budgeting, human resources, and public participation, which are key parameters for securing the Adipura Award.

"Based on the national waste governance assessment framework, Ciamis District is the only district among 514 districts and cities to secure the highest score after one year of monitoring," Nurofiq said.

He said the assessment covered waste banks, 3R waste processing sites, and community participation.

Nurofiq also underscored the need to upgrade low-value waste processing technologies to ensure all residual waste can be managed.
