The ministry's Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, said in a statement on Sunday that strengthening national readiness is key to preventing economic losses and ensuring that the food supply remains safe and stable for the public.
Reflecting on past outbreaks, he stressed that disease control must be well-planned, integrated, and proactive, highlighting the need for implementing rapid case detection and control measures to prevent diseases from spreading.
For 2026, the government has already allocated resources for vaccines, medicines, and disease-control equipment, including Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines.
Nevertheless, he underscored that successful handling measures not only depend on the budget but also on disciplined execution on the ground, particularly through vaccination and the consistent application of biosecurity measures by all parties involved.
"In 2026, the allocation for vaccines and disease control reached approximately 5.6 million doses, utilizing a two-stage FMD vaccination strategy that has proven effective in curbing cases," he explained.
In addition to vaccination, he underscored the vital role of veterinary laboratories as the front line of early detection.
He urged all veterinary centers to ensure that reagents and diagnostic tools are available to avoid any delays in response when a suspected disease emerges.
Furthermore, Suganda conveyed a message from Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, stressing that disease outbreaks must be prevented to avoid disrupting the government’s focus on food security and self-sufficiency, especially ahead of major religious holidays.
He emphasized that controlling animal diseases is not just about animal health, it is directly related to the stability of the supply for essential food items like meat, milk, and eggs.
