Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has instructed Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto to prepare human resources to meet the growing needs of the fisheries industry.

The directive was conveyed during a meeting with Yuliarto and several other officials at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday.

“I was tasked with preparing the human resources because many new fisheries enterprises are set to open,” Yuliarto told reporters after the meeting.

He explained that his responsibility is to ensure that the workforce being developed possesses the necessary skills to support programs initiated by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Among the key topics discussed during the meeting were accelerating the development of the Red and White Fishing Villages and strengthening the national fisheries industry ecosystem through shipyard consolidation and the expansion of downstream processing.

Chair of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN) Dony Oskaria, who also attended the meeting, said that the fishing villages would be integrated into an ecosystem managed by the state-run fisheries company PT Agrinas Jaladri Nusantara (Persero).

According to him, the development of fishing villages must go beyond physical infrastructure and also encompass business operations, particularly the provision of off-takers for their production.

Oskaria added that strengthening the shipyard industry is a crucial component of the strategy and expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for fostering growth in the sector.

To enhance national capacity, shipyard consolidation will be carried out under the state-owned maritime manufacturing company PT PAL Indonesia.

He confirmed that the consolidation process is expected to be completed in the near future, expressing optimism that the move will generate new employment opportunities, particularly for graduates in naval architecture and related fields.
