Jakarta (ANTARA) - Iran’s ambassador to Indonesia said Tehran and Jakarta, as influential middle powers, have a crucial role in promoting peace and stability in Western Asia and Southeast Asia, urging closer coordination between the two countries.

Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi said in a special interview with ANTARA on Friday that Iran and Indonesia occupy strategic positions in their respective regions and can contribute meaningfully to regional security.

“I believe that Iran and Indonesia are very important middle powers in Western Asia and Southeast Asia,” Boroujerdi said.

He pointed to what he described as Iran’s efforts to contain a recent 12-day conflict launched by Israel and its allies against Iran, saying Tehran sought to prevent the fighting from escalating into a broader regional war.

“Iran did its best to prevent the war from becoming regionalized and tried to keep it limited between Iran and the Zionist regime of Israel,” he said.

On Indonesia’s stance, Boroujerdi said Tehran welcomed Jakarta’s support for Palestinian rights and viewed it as standing “on the right side of history.”

He said Iran believes the two countries should intensify dialogue and explore new initiatives to help advance peace and security in the region.

Regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, Boroujerdi expressed skepticism that existing peace initiatives would succeed, arguing that agreements over more than 75 years had failed to produce lasting results.

“We are not going to prevent any peace process. We are just estimating the situation. We say it is not going to work,” he said.

To achieve lasting peace, Boroujerdi said Palestinians must be allowed to determine their own political future through democratic means.

“If you want anything to work in the region, you must go for democracy, for the people of Palestine to choose what they want,” he said, adding that solutions imposed by countries he described as non-neutral would not succeed.

He reiterated that closer cooperation between Iran and Indonesia could help strengthen regional stability and amplify calls for what he called a more balanced international approach to resolving the conflict.
