Nusantara (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has confirmed the readiness of medical services and facilities for civil servants and the public in the future capital Nusantara (IKN), now under development across two districts in East Kalimantan Province.

IKN Authority (OIKN) Director of Basic Services Suwito stressed his office’s commitment to ensuring the availability and accessibility of essential services, particularly in the Government Core Area (KIPP).

"We have prepared health services and social protection for civil servants and residents in IKN," he said at the capital development site in North Penajam Paser District on Sunday.

Regarding civil servant transfers, Suwito announced that 16 ministries and state agencies would gradually begin operating in Nusantara in 2026 to advance preparations for the city to become the seat of government.

He noted that the government has established four hospitals in the KIPP, three of which are already operating: the Health Ministry’s Central General Hospital, Nusantara Mayapada Hospital, and Nusantara Hermina Hospital.

"Hospital capacity in the new capital reaches two to three beds per 1,000 residents, exceeding the national standard of at least one per 1,000 residents," Suwito added.

The official reported that medical services covered by state health insurer BPJS Kesehatan are already available at Hermina and Mayapada hospitals, adding that similar services for work-related accidents, illnesses, and injuries had been made accessible across the KIPP.

He said the OIKN is committed to fostering a healthy and comfortable living environment for Nusantara residents, including by placing fish in retention ponds to naturally eliminate mosquito larvae and organizing public education and outreach activities.

Indonesia’s plan to relocate its capital was initiated under the administration of the seventh president, Joko Widodo, who argued the move was necessary to promote more balanced national development beyond the long-standing Java-centric model.

President Prabowo Subianto has assured that his government will continue construction of Nusantara, with the aim of declaring it the capital for political affairs by 2028. He reinforced this commitment with his first presidential visit to the city in January 2025.

To support that target, the Indonesian government has launched the second phase of development, focusing on key infrastructure and facilities for judicial and legislative institutions, scheduled to run through 2027.
